Shop nowA cozy living room isn’t about expensive furniture. It’s about how the room feels at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday. Here are the ten changes that made the biggest difference in my own home, most of them for little or no money.
1. Turn off the overhead light
The fastest way to add coziness is to light the room at eye level and below. Aim for three light sources in different corners: a floor lamp, a table lamp and something that glows, like candles or a string of fairy lights.
2. Switch to warm bulbs
Look for bulbs labeled 2700K (“soft white”). Anything higher reads as office lighting.
3. Layer your textiles
Pillows in two or three textures (linen, knit, velvet) plus a throw blanket casually draped over the arm. I swap my pillow covers seasonally instead of buying new pillows.
4. Pull furniture off the walls
Even a few inches helps. Floating the sofa and angling a chair creates a conversation area that feels intimate.
5. Size up your rug
A rug that’s too small makes a room feel disjointed. At minimum, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on it.
6. Bring in something living
Plants, fresh clippings or a vase of dried pampas add softness and life.
7. Add something handmade
A macramé hanging, a framed watercolor, a stack of your favorite books. Personal pieces are what make a room yours. (My macramé wall hanging tutorial is a great weekend project.)
8. Create a “landing spot”
A basket for blankets, a tray on the ottoman for remotes and a coaster. Reducing visual clutter makes a room feel calmer instantly.
9. Use scent
A candle, a simmer pot on the stove or a reed diffuser. Cozy is a full-body experience!
10. Hang curtains high and wide
Mount the rod a few inches below the ceiling and extend it past the window frame. Floor-length curtains make any room feel taller and more finished.
Pick just two or three of these to start. I’d bet your living room feels cozier by this weekend.
