Start by clearing everything
Take everything off. It’s the only way to see the shelves with fresh eyes.
Rule 1: Start with the big pieces
Place your largest items first: a tall vase, a framed print leaning against the back, a large basket. Stagger them in a zigzag from shelf to shelf so the eye moves across the whole unit.
Rule 2: Group in threes
Cluster objects in odd numbers with varying heights: a tall vase, a medium candle and a small bowl.
Rule 3: Mix books both ways
Stand some books upright and stack others horizontally. A horizontal stack makes a perfect pedestal for a small object.
Rule 4: Add something organic
Plants, a branch, dried grasses, a wooden bowl. Natural textures keep shelves from looking sterile.
Rule 5: Leave breathing room
Aim for about one-third empty space. Negative space is what makes shelves look intentional.
When in doubt, take one thing away.
